Historic fortress in Lancaster

Lancaster Castle is an impressive historical fortress in the city of Lancaster, reflecting a long and fascinating history. The castle, perched on a hill above the city, was originally founded in 1093 by Roger de Poitou, a Norman nobleman. Since then, it has undergone numerous changes and served various purposes over the centuries - from a military fortress to a court and prison.

Architecture of Lancaster Castle

The architecture of Lancaster Castle is a fascinating blend of different architectural styles. The construction of the castle began in the Norman style, and over the centuries, further additions were made in the medieval, Gothic, and Georgian styles. A prominent feature of the castle is the "Lancaster Gate," which serves as the entrance to the fortress. From here, visitors can explore the extensive grounds, serving as both a tourist attraction and a historical monument.

Lancaster Castle and witch trials

The castle has played a central role not only as a fortress but also as a venue for legal and social events. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that Lancaster Castle served as a court for many centuries, hosting important trials. The so-called "Lancashire Witches Trials" in the 17th century, where women were accused and convicted of witchcraft, are especially famous. This dark episode in history is a significant part of the castle's heritage, and today visitors can learn more about these trials and visit the cells and courtroom once used for such proceedings.

Tour of Lancaster Castle

The interiors of the castle are as fascinating as the exteriors. The "Shire Hall," a magnificent hall, was where important court cases were held. The room is known for its architecture and historical ambiance. The castle also houses prison cells that visitors can see, giving them a glimpse of the harsh conditions that prevailed there for centuries.

Importance of Lancaster Castle

In addition to its legal and military significance, Lancaster Castle is also a cultural landmark. The castle has been the setting for many historical events, reflecting the development of the city of Lancaster and its surroundings. Its strategic location on a hill allowed residents to monitor the River Lune and the surrounding landscape, making it an important defensive structure.

Today, Lancaster Castle is a significant tourist destination and an attraction for history enthusiasts. Visitors can learn more about the history of the castle, the different phases of its use, and its role in British history. In particular, tours of the old courtrooms, cells, and watchtowers provide an impressive insight into life in earlier times.

I went with my wife to visit the castle and tbh it was a letdown you can walk into to the courtyard but to see anything of interest they charge you which I would not have a problem with but and here is my problem with it the police museum that’s also located in the castle is free on Thursday and Friday. But all other days you have to pay this accord to one of the staff it’s for insurance if you trip or fall which i think is stretching the truth to say the least. I think it’s more the case squeeze as much money out of inspecting tourists

It presents a great combination of history, a working court, and a prime, semis location.

Visited on a Monday in March 2025.. It is free to enter however to enter the actual castle it is required to buy a tour. Even if you don’t enter it’s nice to go in and have a look. Good history aswell

Awful guided tour. Scared children by shouting at them unnecessarily. Rude. Just talked about the prison and was proud of the horrid horrific acts performed at this historic castle. Would have been more educational if the tour guide didn’t seem to be impressed and insanely obsessed with the barbarism inflicted on women and children in the past here and the ties to slave trade. Just absolutely appalling

Such an interesting building to visit. Entry is free but I would recommend going on a guided tour as you can then access many of the areas which are otherwise off limits as the castle still contains a working court. Simon, our guide, was very knowledgeable and entertaining and it was fascinating to gain insight into the rich history of the castle.
